[What I Read] Recommended

So I like to read. A lot. And I like to read different things. Here are some of my favorite books and reasons why you should read them.

• "Looking For Alaska" by John Greene

1. A veritable loner goes to boarding school in Alabama and meets a lot of people; how he acts around these new friends is really quite hilarious.
2. Pudge, the narrator, is very relatable. He's your average 16 year old boy falling in love for the first time.
3. Alaska: the girl I wanted to be in high school. She's cool, confident, and has a whole library of books that I would kill for. Plus, she's gorgeous.
4. Pudge is obsessed with last words, famous or not. I learned a lot of surprising tidbits while reading this.
5. John Greene has a way with words. The first sentence captured me and held on.

This book does have quite the mouth on it. A lot of cursing, but I was able to look past it. The story is so amazingly moving. I cried. True story.

• "The Last Wish" by Andrzej Sapkowski

1. Dark and haunting with a completely original main character, Geralt the Witcher, this book takes familiar tales and twists them to fit the narration.
2. A horror story, a love story and a fantasy novel all in one. Who can say no to three wishes, a child surprise and twisted princesses?
3. This one's for Husband: The Last Wish and it's accompanying novels were the inspiration for "The Witcher" and "The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings" video games, which altogether have won over 100 awards.

There are a few scenes in this book that are decidedly "adult," but they are easy enough to skip, and have no details that would make you cringe. Very well written novel, altogether.

• "A Great And Terrible Beauty" by Libba Bray

1. It's set in 1890's in a girl's boarding school in the English countryside. That fact alone makes it magical and enchanting.
2. The protagonist, Gemma, sees visions and is able to enter another, forbidden world where beauty and darkness are practically everywhere.
3. Forbidden attractions between Gemma and a mysterious Indian boy who followed her to England after a tragic loss.

I don't want to say too much about this book because it is that good. Trust me. It's set in proper late-19th England, so I find it safe to read.
